"The future of CALL"
A joint IATEFL Computer SIG & TESOL CALL-IS Online Fielded Discussion
"Where has Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) been, where is it now and where is it going?" (Bax, 2002)
The questions raised by Stephen Bax and other scholars are still very timely. Are we satisfied with the development that CALL has taken? How would we like CALL to develop in the future? Should specific areas be given priority in CALL-related research?
The above questions are but a few among those which often puzzle our minds. What better time to discuss the future than at the beginning of a new year.
Please join the IATEFL COMP-SIG and the TESOL CALL-IS in discussing thoughts, opinions, beliefs and hopes and aspirations for the future of CALL. This online discussion will take place on the electronic list of IATEFL COMP-SIG and will be fielded by Stephen Bax (Canterbury Christ Church University College).
The discussion will take place from 31st January to 5th February. Food for thought is available in the form of two articles:

"Independently Online"
A joint Computer SIG / Learner Independence SIG event
Venue: Thames Valley University, Reading Campus
Themes
Do the same principles of learner autonomy in the classroom apply in the online learning situation? The Conference will aim to explore the principles and practices which need to be considered in an online learning environment where the aim is to support and foster greater learner autonomy. It will consider how different factors affect the design and functionality of materials for such an environment.
Keynote speakers: Barbara Sinclair, Gavin Dudeney, Nicky Hockly, Klaus Schwienhorst
One keynote speaker will be Barbara Sinclair from the University of Nottingham, who has done considerable work in the field of developing learner autonomy in language learning. She is currently involved in developing online materials for an interactive learning environment for an innovative Sino-UK collaborative project, funded by HEFCE, to support the development of teacher and learner autonomy in Middle Schools and tertiary institutions in China.
Other Keynote speakers include Gavin Dudeney and Nicky Hockly, and Klaus Schwienhorst.
Gavin and Nicky are currently involved in trainer training online – particularly in the field of e-moderation skills and are working with global organisations on the implementation of Communities of Practice and ‘groups that learn’. Their session will look at how learner autonomy can be encouraged and developed through Communities of Practice Online.
Klaus is based in Ireland and works at Trinity College in Dublin. He is well-known for his work on Virtual Reality Environments and autonomy. His session will look at a variety of current CALL technologies such as computer-mediated communication (CMC); intelligent CALL (ICALL); corpus linguistics; and Internet/DVD hybrids and how they relate to learner autonomy principles. He will then explore the question how CALL software can develop into CALL "environments". How can we adjust pedagogical and technological frameworks in the computer-assisted language classroom?
Ideas exchange session
There will also be a session on exchange of ideas; each individual will have a 10-minute slot to present a practical activity, based on the principles of promoting autonomy in an online learning environment.

A day of talks and hands-on workshops
Two of IATEFL's biggest SIGs, the Teacher Trainers & Educators SIG and the Computer SIG, are presenting a day of talks and hands-on workshops focussing on the role of computers in teacher education. The following major areas will be explored:
Blended learning for EFL methodology courses
- How does one offer an online course in EFL Methodology for trainee teachers? How does one integrate an online component with face to face (f2f) components? How do trainee teachers perceive the experience?
- Presenter: Robert O'Dowd, Universidad de León, Spain
In-service IT training
- How can one provide a guided IT programme in an in-service teacher training environment? How does one deal with the difficulties of training staff who are pressed for time, perhaps unskilled computer users, and reluctant to take on new skills? How can the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) be successfully integrated into teaching?
- Presenter: Paul Hullock, Bell Educational Trust, UK
Designing materials for online delivery
- How does one design and create effective online learning materials for language teachers? What knowledge and skills from teacher education courses might best be provided for online? What issues of instructional design need to be taken into account?
- Presenter: Gary Motteram, University of Manchester, UK
Adapting f2f cascade training to online delivery
- How can one deliver training, which is both cost-effective and meaningful, in a geographically dispersed organisation? How can one adapt traditional f2f cascade training models to more flexible online models which better meet teachers' needs?
- Presenters: Martin Peacock and Alex Gibson, British Council
Essential skills for the online tutor
- How does one train the online trainers most effectively? What skills base does the online tutor / trainer need to implement a successful online training programme?
- Presenters: Nicky Hockly and Gavin Dudeney, The Consultants-E, Spain
The presenters for the PCE are all experienced ICT trainers in the field of ELT, with a special interest and experience in the areas identified above. Opportunities will be given in each session to try out and experience the training materials being referred to.
